The goal of many scouts is to become an Eagle Scout, and numerous Troop 159 Scouts reach this pinnacle every year. While rank advancement is done independently at a scout's own pace, our meetings and outings have many opportunities for scouts who wish to pursue advancement.
What is Troop 159's rank advancement process?
Bring Handbook- Scouts should bring their Scouting America handbook to all weekly meetings and overnight outings. The handbook details everything needed to complete each rank requirement. (Photocopies of the rank advancement signature pages can be brought on backpacking trips to save weight.)
Collect Signatures- Rank Advancement signature pages begin on page 441. When a Scout feels they have completed a requirement for a rank, they can ask for a signature & date in their book from the following people:
- A fellow scout at least two ranks above them.
- Scoutmaster or Assistant Scoutmasters.
- A registered leader previously approved by the Scoutmaster.
It is the scout’s responsibility to ask for signatures each time they feel they have met a rank requirement.
Scoutmaster Conference- Once all rank requirements have been completed (and signed off) in the scout's handbook, the scout should request a Scoutmaster Conference with the Scoutmaster.
Board of Review- After the successful completion of their Scoutmaster Conference, the scout should request a Board of Review by asking in person, or emailing our Scoutmaster and Advancement Chair. A Board of 3 registered adults will meet with the scout.
Wear Class A Uniform- Scouts should wear their Class A uniform when attending both their Scoutmaster Conference and their Board of Review.
Receive Rank Patch- After completion of the Board of Review, the scout will receive their new rank patch which they can apply to their Class A uniform immediately.
Court of Honor- Scouts will also have their rank awarded at the next quarterly Court of Honor, attended by all scouts and family members.
